Dovre 500CBW

Dovre 500 Stove Review

The Dovre 500 is a masterpiece of casting proficiency and up-to-date technology. Not only does it offer classic stove appeal but it also features a separate ashpan door, for easier removal of ash, and a choice of six different versions. The multi-fuel model is available with either a fixed grate or a riddling grate, and has the further option of clear or lattice doors. The woodburner, on the other hand, incorporates a special cleanburn system that is so effective it has been approved by the Department of the Environment for use in smoke controlled zones. It, too, has the option of a lattice door.

This was my second Dovre. Very happy with the first 5KW. However with the 500(7KW)I have a couple of issues. First, the blanks, top and back are still in the cast – the smaller versions have a blanking plate to put in either position. Here the blank has to be ‘knocked out of the cast iron. They supplied a ‘puller’ which was completely the wrong design and could not be used. I contacted the manufacturer and they told me to drill around the shape and tap with a hammer. I decided that I wasn’t prepared to risk this (an expensive crack in the cast iron?). My supplier was reluctant to do it as well for the same reason but I insisted and he came and did it successfully (Thank you). I am also a little disappointed with the size of the burning space – I was expacting to be able to put larger logs in. Finally, you are seemingly expected to push the ash through a hole in the base into the tray underneath. It doesn’t really work like that for me and I scoop it out from the top. In my opinion then, the ash tray is a waste of space and I would rather have had a larger fire space.
The machine does look good and burns and draws well.

This was are first stove, we took a long time looking round shops and the internet for advice and reviews, the Dovre was an easy choice in the end as there was really nothing we could find to compete with it,
Lights first time every time, don’t understand the problems the other reviewer had as we never had these, dust empting is simple with the dust pan door at the bottom, simple to rake the ash through the grille, this fire has been a pleasure to live with, has provided many cosy nights, Heated our three bedroom semi and reduced are gas bill to around £130 for the quarter, door glass stays clean, the flue can be easily accessed through the door for easy cleaning with rods and brush, we are moving home and having an other one installed, as this fire is approved for smokeless zones, might opt for the 700 model this time, but would be as happy to live with the 500, Great quality stove all round.
