Esse 700/700-17B

Esse 700 / 700-17B Review

The Esse 700 is the latest stove to be born at the Esse foundry and is the flagship model in the new look range. It may be our latest stove but it firmly upholds the virtues and qualities of Esse’s dating back over a century and a half. Every line and curve of the Esse 700 stove has been designed to exude an air of simple elegance, that will sit comfortably with a wide range of interior styles and hearth environments. The gently arching double doors provide a spectacular and virtually unrestricted view of the flames. This view is further enhanced by our unique handle-less door opening mechanism which uses a spring loaded latch with a key release on the side of the stove.

We have had the Esse 700 (with back boiler) for a year now. As an Engineer, I think that Overall, the stove is not bad when measured against our previous stove, an old but superb logburning Jotul No.6 with a back boiler.

I list below what I consider to be negative design points:

    1) Ash pan / handle is not a very good design – difficult to insert in the handle into the slot in the ash to remove it.

    2) the handle came to us ‘as-stamped’ and with burrs on the edges – I had to remove them to prevent us cutting our hands on the thing.

    3) The riddle mechanism is not very well designed; and small pieces of wood jam in the thing.

    4) a choice of rear chimney would be really beneficial.

    5) The air wash is not all that efficient. I assume that you will state the it is my technique and you are free to do so but for me, it has scope for improvement.

    6) With a little deign thought, you COULD have made the doors so that they simply lift off the hinges for easier cleaning. I can swing mine through 180 degress and they almost, but not quite, lift off. Pity…

    That’s the main points.
