Hunter Herald 8 Wood/Multifuel

Hunter Herald 8 Review

The Herald 8 Slimline is ideal for larger fireplaces, in standard sized rooms, as it can be run on full capacity for a great flame picture, without making the room unbearably hot.

I have found the stove very satisfactory, the heat output is excellnt/
One of the firebricks broke very soon after installation for no obvious reason, the bricks appear to be fragile.
I find the Air control slide is difficult to adjust to keep the fire low
Generally speaking I am quite pleased with the stove and the service provided by Fires On Line

I have the hunter herald 8 boiler and it works wonderful, Well built and gives out plenty of heat. Have used multifuel and wood and is good with both fuels. Had a thermostat fitted to the boiler but seems a waste of time never got that to work right so took it off and didnt notice any difference. Usually empty the ashes and clean the glass once a week to keep it looking fine. it gives plenty of hotwater. Had family down to stay and they had 5 showers in a row no problem. It will run the central heating as well but needs stoking up every 2 to 3 hours to keep sufficient temperatures. Because of that I use it as a dual fuel system, linking the gas and wood burner via a dunsley neutralizer. Sounds a bit like something from star trek i know but works a treat. Basically when the wood burners on the gas boiler isn’t, and when the wood burner goes out the gas boiler takes over until you relight the wood burner boiler. got all my details from fires on line.

I purchased the double door variant so sit between two rooms. Overall I’m pleased with the stove’s performance and with it’s look and fit. Control of the air vents has taken some getting used to and I have to keep the underside breathe holes closed otherwise a continuous whistle can be heard as air is drawn. A downside of a doublesided fire is when refuelling any smoke or fumes are drawn out of the fire through the opposite vents from the refuelling side. This a little unpleasant. Discipline is required to ensure the fuel is combusting efficiently and the fire is very hot before refuelling.

Happy with heat output and stove in general, however the finish on the front has started to come off when you dust and also the finish on the top has deteriated quite badly. Little difficult to control to keep glass clean. Only have to empty ashes once a week. Pleased overall little disapointed with exterior finish considering not yet a year old and had little use.

Beats our old wood burner hands down. The technology in this stove is capable of heating an old Victorian house. Last winter’s bad weather was no problem. Used coal during the day for tick over and boosted it on the night with wood for the comfort factor. From first lighting it takes about an hour to get up to temperature. As with all stoves there is a knack to using them this one is relatively easy.
The air wash system works perfectly in keeping the glass clean when burning wood but we found that coal sooted the glass and need regular cleaning. As with all stoves using well seasoned wood is the secret.

the size of it makes it easier to load up than our previous hunter 6 however lacks the control on closing down. We also have a problem with smoke blowing back into the room – think this may be due to box gatherer. Finish is tarnished after only on e seasons use. Door scrubs up well.

We purchased the single door version, which gives a lovely view of the fire when burning wood logs. Output is great, especially when burning anthracite which keeps going for most the day without much attention.

Overall very happy with it. We bought off FiresOnline were good to deal with and were happy to help and offer advice over the phone before and after purchasing.

Wonderful heat output, but very disappointing finish. Door handles difficult, air vents difficult to control, door glass very poorly fitted, not securely fastened in, causing excess air flow so fast burn, need to fit new door and glass seals already. Apart from the heat output and ease of emptying ash, not a patch on our first Hunter.

We purchased a coloured version of the stove, which we began to regret as it took about 10 weeks for delivery, Hunters being unable to give a firm delivery date, it eventually arrived at 2.30 pm on Christmas Eve, the delay being nothing to do with Fires Online who remained in constant touch. I installed it myself, the only problem being installing the firebars as the instructions were rather obscure. Apart from that, we are very pleased with it, it is easy to light and clean out, only needing emptying once a week, and gives plenty of heat, although the air inlet controls need a lot of tweaking to get a steady burn. The Building Control officer was quite impressed too!

We are on day two of having the double door version fitted. When burning wood we have smoke in doors and when using solid fuel we are having dust issues. We are happy with the bottom controls but cannot find what position is what for the top ones. Can anyone assist?
